Korean pop group Wonder Girls [Asia Economic Daily]

Korean pop sensation Wonder Girls, who are currently promoting their latest album "2 Different Tears" with new member Lim, have said that former bandmate "Mimi's happiness is important" as much as the group's success.

The girls made the remark while appearing on KBS talk show "Win Win" aired Tuesday, when asked how they felt about Mimi leaving the group last February to attend college and go back to living a normal life.

The members explained that Mimi had often mentioned in the U.S., where they were working particularly hard to promote themselves last year, that she was a having hard time and seriously considered quitting her music career.

"Every time she said that, we would jokingly say 'Okay, don't do this, quit.'" said the girls on the show. "If we had known that she was serious, we would have been more supportive of her. We feel bad that we weren't."

"It was a really painful and difficult time," said a teary Yenny. "We tried hard [to get Mimi to stay] and even tried to ignore her decision to quit the group. But it didn't work."

"The happiness of the Wonder Girls is important, but I felt that Mimi's happiness is important as well," added the group's leader Sun. "It was a decision we made after a long discussion with Mimi."

The girls also said that they congratulated their former bandmate after she passed her college entrance qualification exam earlier this month and thanked her for monitoring the group's comeback performance and sending a text message in support.

On a different note, Wonder Girls' youngest member Sohee revealed on the show how she felt about Sulli, the youngest in another popular girl band f(x).

"These days, I find people who are younger than me so adorable," the 17-year-old star was quoted as saying. "I used to be the youngest person working but now it feels like I have younger siblings -- it's wonderful."

Wonder Girls recently made a splashing comeback with "2 Different Tears," their first full-length album since "The Wonder Years" in 2007.

With new member Lim replacing Mimi, the girls arrived in Korea last week and has been making appearances on various TV shows to promote the record.

Former Wonder Girls member Sunmi [Lee Jin-hyuk/10Asia]

Former Wonder Girls member Mimi, who quit the group to pursue college studies, has passed Korea's college entrance qualification exam.

According to the regional Office of Education for Gyeongsang province, Mimi's name was included in the list of students who passed the national qualification exam which would make them eligible to apply for universities.

Mimi, whose real name is Lee Sunmi, was one of the five members of Korea's top female pop group Wonder Girls.

She had shocked fans in February when she announced that she would be leaving the group to attend school and go back to living a normal life.

During the time she was working in the band, she was known to expressed her doubts, on several occasions, about living her life as a celebrity.

The 18-year-old singer, who had quit high school last year to expand her singing career to the U.S., fulfilled her responsibility as a member of the group until the end of February.

She returned to Korea the following month to prepare for the college entrance qualification exam and took the test in Pohang on April 11.

Her place in the group has been filled by new member Lim, a JYPE trainee who has been preparing for debut for three years and reportedly speaks four languages including English, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Wonder Girls are set to release their new album "2 Different Tears" on Sunday.

Wonder Girls talk with fans about Mimi's departure

Korean pop group Wonder Girls [Asia Economic Daily]

Four members of Wonder Girls -- Sohee, Yubin, Sun and Yenny -- met with their Korean fans on Monday to talk about various issues surrounding their future activities including member Mimi's departure from the group.

In a phone conversation with Asia Economic Daily yesterday, an official at the girls' agency JYP Entertainment (JYPE) explained that the aforementioned members met with five representatives from the group's fan clubs for a two-hour meeting held at JYPE's office in Seoul.

The fan club representatives then today revealed the contents of their conversation with the pop singers, saying that Mimi -- unlike the other members -- had been longing to live a normal life since early in her career.

The four members said they had been aware of how Mimi felt, especially after the band moved to the United States last year -- hence her decision to leave the group did not come as a shock to them.

Sohee, Yubin, Sun and Yenny tried in the beginning to convince Mimi to stay for a little longer but after much consideration and discussion among all the members, they accepted her decision and informed JYPE executives of the news.

When asked whether Mimi's departure or the group's U.S. debut had been forced by the agency, the members answered that it is a dream for any singer to debut in the U.S. and although they were worried the timing might be too early, they went forth with the relocation because the "really wanted to do it."

The members -- who asked fans to respect Mimi in her decision -- also offered an explanation regarding the group's recent performance in China where newcomer Hae Lim joined them on stage.

They commented that while they would have preferred not to do the performance because it would be an opportunity for people to judge Hae Lim, they could not cancel the gig out of respect for their Chinese sponsors.

Mimi, 17, made headlines last month when she announced that she will be taking a break from the entertainment business and concentrate on her studies. She is set to fulfill her responsibility as a member of the group until the end of February and return to Korea in March to prepare for her college entrance qualification exam.

Her place in the band will be filled by Hae Lim, who had been training under JYPE for several years and speaks four languages including English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
