Q: How did your Hollywood movie project come about?
BoA: Personally, I am a huge fan of the film "Step Up." That film made me re-think about street dancing and I gained passion for dancing. When I heard that the writer of that film offered me a role, I was very surprised. There has been a lot of talk over the years that I would start acting, but I wasn't up for it because my original job is being a singer and I was worried that once I started to act, it would look like acting was my full-time job. But I like that this movie is a dance film. As a singer, there is no opportunity to leave behind my dancing as a work of its own. But being able to express a two-hour movie with dancing, I think that, in itself, will be of great help to my career.

Q: It seems like you participated more on this album than you did on your previous ones. It even carries two tracks that were written by you.
BoA: I hadn't originally planned on writing a song. But once, I had finished touring in Japan and had nothing to do and no one play with so I bought a computer and a songwriting program. I had no agenda at the time and I just started making beats which it was fun. So I just kept on writing and out came a song. I actually thought the company wouldn't put it on the album but they told me the song is "better than expected." So I was like, what do they mean by better than expected? (laugh) For the track "Let Me," everyone knows that I love dancing so I wrote about the desire for dancing in the format of a battle. "Day By Day" is a pop ballad that has very dark lyrics. When I was working on it, I felt similar to how I had felt when writing the lyrics in Japan for a song called 'moon & sunrise' and I wanted to express things like joy, sorrow, hope and solitude.

Korean pop singer BoA [SM Entertainment]

She has topped music charts in both Korea and Japan. She made her debut in the U.S. and took on the challenge of making it onto the Billboard charts and was recently cast in a Hollywood dance pic which will be produced by the makers of the film "Step Up." It took her ten years to achieve all these accomplishments. And BoA is now twenty-four years old. In that respect, "Hurricane Venus," BoA's first record release in Korea in five years, carries more meaning than it being just a new album. What kind of music does this singer, who has achieved almost everything she can achieve commercially and is now reaching her peak as a singer and dancer, want to make? Below are excerpts from a press conference with BoA, held on August 4.

"Avatar" producers to film BoA, TVXQ concerts in 3D

Korean idol group TVXQ performing at concert [SM Entertainment]

Director James Cameron and his team of producers behind Hollywood blockbuster pic "Avatar" have agreed to produce the music videos and concert videos for BoA, TVXQ and other artists under agency SM Entertainment (SM) in 3D format.

Cameron -- currently in town for the annual Seoul Digital Forum -- met with Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics' executives and SM founder Lee Soo-man at the "3D Content-Related Cooperation Plan" event, held today at Samsung offices in Seocho District, where they announced news of the collaboration.

According to the plan, "Avatar" producers will be filming SM artists' music videos and concerts in 3D and electronics giant Samsung will use the 3D content in the company's worldwide marketing plan for its 3D television products.

The filming for the 3D concert is expected to begin "around June" in Korea, presumably at live music concerts featuring BoA, TVXQ and Girls' Generation.

Producer and entertainment mogul Lee Soo-man expressed his anticipation, saying "I am proud to be able to work with a global company like Samsung Electronics and the best team of producers in the world. I think we will come up with the best 3D content."

Female pop singer BoA, who also attended the event with TVXQ members Max Changmin and U-Know Yunho, commented, "I am glad and excited to take part in such a fantastic event. I will try my best to become an artist who approaches fans with great content."

The TVXQ singers said they will "work hardest to create a new kind of cultural content."

SM Entertainment, considered one of the top talent agencies in Korea, just yesterday disclosed information on its earnings for the first quarter of the year, indicating its most successful first quarter to date.

The firm recorded operating profits of 10.4 billion won, or over nine million dollars, during the three month period, which is an increase by an astounding 471 percent from the same period last year.

BoA has been one of the most successful K-pop artists since first making her debut ten years ago and is one of the first Korean artists to make a major breakthrough into the Japanese music industry. She also made her U.S. debut in March 2009.

Five member boy-band TVXQ is also one of Asia's top artists with reportedly the largest fanbase in the world but they have ceased working as an entirety since July last year after three of its members, namely Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, became embroiled in a legal battle with SM.

Rain, Seven, Hyo-ri, and Boa to Return to Korea

Four popular Korean solo singers -- Rain, Seven, Hyo-ri, and Boa -- will come back to the Korean pop scene. Netizens call them the representative singers for Korean pop in the 2000s, and they are overjoyed at their return. Rain and Hyo-ri will come back after breaks of 18 months and 20 months, respectively. Seven and Boa, who have focused on the American music industry up to now, return to the Korean music scene after breaks of three years and five years, respectively. The return of these famous solo singers is drawing people’s attention because girls groups and new idol groups gained popularity last year.

In addition, Rain will release a mini album containing 4 or 5 songs in late April. He did not record a new album because he played the protagonist in his first Hollywood film, “Ninja Assassin,” and helped the group Mblaq debut in 2009. His agency, J Tune Entertainment, said, “We have already recorded some songs, but we are still in the process of collecting better songs from songwriters. We will release Rain’s regular album this October.”

Seven is currently recording his new album and will release it in the first half of the year. He is recording songs written by songwriters from YG Entertainment, but he plans to continue the recording process until he is fully satisfied with the results.

Boa plans to release her new album on August 25, the date on which she released her first album 10 years ago. Her agency, SM Entertainment, said they have been discussing the style of the new album because Boa released records in Japan and the U.S. since she released her fifth album “Girls on Top” in 2005.

Music industry officials are expecting that the four solo singers could set a new music trend in the Korean pop music scene because girl groups and idol groups have been continuously gaining popularity early this year as well as last year. A representative of an entertainment agency said, “It has not been easy for solo singers to succeed in the Korean pop industry. I am wondering if the four solo singers will succeed or not. If they succeed in the Korean pop industry at this time, entertainment agencies will pay attention to experienced and capable singers more than they do now."

In addition, an official at a performance agency said, “We don’t know about the music style of their new albums yet, but their music will provide the Korean pop music scene, which features electronic dance music, with diversity and change.” He added, “We highly anticipate the new performances of Rain, Boa, and Seven, who have performed on major stages in Asia. Furthermore, Eru, Sung Si-kyung, and Eric will leave the army from May to October, after Kangta was discharged from military last month. Their comebacks are also drawing people’s attention." Eru and Sung’s agency said, “They plan to make a comeback this year.”

BoA prepping for comeback in Korea

Korean pop singer BoA on her jacket cover for "Bump Bump!" [SM Entertainment]

Korean pop singer BoA will be making a comeback to the K-pop music scene with her first album release in five years, according to her agency SM Entertainment.

An official at SM explained yesterday that BoA is "preparing for a comeback in Korea with a new album" but added that "time of release and details about the album have not been established as of yet."

Her last album in Korea was "Girls on Top", released in 2005, and she has been busy working in Japan and U.S.

The songstress released her seventh album "Identity" in Japan last month, which she also co-produced. She will be wrapping up her two-month tour in the country on April 16.

BoA, one of the most active K-pop stars on the international scene, debuted in August 2000 with the album "ID; Peace B". She has released eight studio albums in Korea, six in Japan and made her U.S. debut in March 2009.

This year marks her ten-year anniversary of her debut in the music industry.
