Lee Hyori's agency sues Bahnus Vacuum

Korean pop singer Lee Hyori [Asia Economic Daily]

Top Korean singer Lee Hyori's agency Mnet Media has taken legal action for the recent plagiarism controversy surrounding Lee's latest album "H-Logic," filing criminal charges against record producer group Bahnus Vaccuum to Seoul West District Prosecutors' Office on Thursday.

"Bahnus provided [Lee and Mnet Media] songs that were plagiarized," an official at Mnet Media told Asia Economic Daily over the phone on Thursday. "Today [July 1], we filed a criminal lawsuit against Bahnus Vaccuum for fraud and obstruction of work."

The official explained that Bahnus had committed fraud by providing plagiarized songs and obstructed the activities relating to Lee's record production and sales. He said that Mnet is currently trying to find the original foreign songwriter.

Lee had received a total of seven songs from a producer group named Bahnus Vacuum, known as a project group consisting of seven members, who initially denied the allegations by claiming the demos had been leaked by illegal means.

On June 20, however, the singer posted a message on her official fan cafe, admitting that several songs on the record were plagiarized and announced a break from all musical activities until the plagiarism controversy gets solved.

According to the Wikipedia entry for Lee, the songs that are reportedly accused of being plagiarized are; "I'm Back" (plagiarized from Canadian indie-singer Lil Precious' track "So Insane"); "Memory" (from British Trip-Hop group Second Person's track "The Alphabet Song"); "Feel the Same" (from Canadian indie-singer Melanie Durrant's "Feel the Same"); "Swing" (of which the melody resembles Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis' "To treno fegi stis ohto"); "Bring it Back" (from aspiring Canadian girl-group Cookie Couture's "Boy Bring it Back"); and "How Did We Get" (from Jason Derulo's "How Did We", which also sampled Annie Lennox's "No More I Love You's", which on its turn is a cover from the song with the same name by The Lover Speaks).

This is not the first time that Lee's music has been accused of plagiarism. In 2006, the song "Get Ya," the title track from her second solo album "Dark Angel," drew immediate controversy over having plagiarized U.S. pop star Britney Spears' hit tune "Do Something.'"

Lee, 30, debuted in 1998 as a member of popular girl band Fin.K.L. and went solo after the group disbanded in 2002. She has released four studio albums as a solo artist, producing several hits including “10 Minutes”, “Hey Girl” and “U-Go-Girl”.

She has also branched out to acting, hosting and appearing on variety shows, most notably on the first season of SBS’ “Family Outing”.

The singer was enjoying a comeback to the music scene with "H-Logic," which was released on April 15. The title single "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" swept various K-pop music charts over the past few months.

Lee Hyori Removes Plagiarized Tracks From Album

After Lee Hyori finally spoke out about the plagiarism allegations directed at her most recent album, H-Logic, Mnet Media also announced their course of action. The company has revealed that they will be taking legal action against Bahnus, who is the composer allegedly behind these plagiarized tracks. In addition to the filed lawsuit, seven songs from H-Logic will be removed from online music sites to prevent any additional sales. These seven songs include "I'm Back", "Feel the Same", "Bring It Back", "Highlight", "Swing", "How Did We Get", and "Memory".

Also, the pop diva has started up her own entertainment agency, B2M Entertainment, to start self-managing her activities in August.

Lee Hyori admits to plagiarism accusations

Korean pop singer Lee Hyori [Asia Economic Daily]

Top Korean singer Lee Hyori has admitted that several songs from her latest album "H-Logic" were plagiarized, taking responsibility for the situation by announcing a break from all musical activities until the matter is sorted out.

The singer posted a message on her official fan cafe on Sunday morning, providing fans with a detailed explanation of the entire situation and stating that "there will be no follow-up activities unless [the plagiarism controversy] gets solved."

"There were some problems with songs by songwriter Bahnus Vaccum," wrote Lee on the website. "And after looking into the matter, we found that the songs are not the property of Bahnus Vacuum."

Lee had received a total of seven songs from a producer group named Bahnus Vacuum, known as a project group consisting of seven members, who initially denied the allegations by claiming the demos had been leaked by illegal means.

The Korean pop star went onto say, "At first, I believed that the demos had been leaked and I did not suspect anything because I got the songs through my company." Lee is represented by Mnet Media, which runs a major cable music channel in Korea.

"But after our own investigation, I discovered that they were not Bahnus' songs. I will take the moral responsibility and do my best to sort out the issue," said Lee. "This is an album that I cherish very much, so I am heartbroken and I blamed myself a lot for not having been more thorough."

She ended by the message with a public apology, saying "I would like to say once again that I am sorry to everyone who were hurt by this incident."

With composers of "Do Somethin'" accusing Lee's team of plagiarism, Lee and Mnet Media abruptly halted all promotion for "Get Ya" and quickly released a follow-up single titled "Shall We Dance."

The title single "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" swept various K-pop music charts over the past two months.

Cast stunned by Goo's surprise act

In the KBS-2TV's "Happy Together" which aired Thursday, Goo was getting ready to perform following the performances of top stars Lee Hyori and Rain. Goo reinacted Lee's hit "U Go Girl."

Throughout the program, the bashful Goo, a big fan of Rain, couldn't look Rain in the eyes. But she startled everyone when she took off her pants to change into a new pair for her performance. Lee said, "You should have told us what you were doing and at least turned your hips to the other side."

When Goo was set to perform, she dumped her coyness and turned wild and danced provocatively before Rain. After the show, Lee said, "Kids today are so daring," while Rain said, "Can I excuse myself to wash off my sweat?" to which everyone laughed.

Joining Goo, Lee and Rain as a guest on the episode was boy band MBLAQ's Lee Joon. The second half of Happy Together featured a new team of guests, Nichkhun and Junho of 2PM and actors Gang Seong-jin and Lee Seong-jae.

Lee Hyori says "was once attracted to Rain"

Korean pop singers Rain (left) and Lee Hyori

Korean pop stars Lee Hyori and Rain are making news for saying that they were both attracted to each other at one point during their decade-long friendship.

They made the remark while making a guest appearance on MBC variety talk show "Come On Over," which aired Monday evening.

"Lee Hyori is a person who has a lot of charms," said Rain on the show. "She exudes an unbelievable aura on stage but she is like a vulnerable little girl in some ways."

He went on to say, "Hyori doesn't know this but I think she has a power that attracts men."

When Lee asked Rain if he ever thought about her in a romantic way, he answered, "There is no man who would not regard Lee Hyori as a woman."

Lee then admitted to once having felt romantic feelings for Rain. "There was one time when I thought of Rain as more than just a friend -- when I bumped into him at a tanning shop," explained Lee. "He was in the next room and I heard him taking his clothes off. I started to imagine things."

The two singers, both famous for their huge sex appeal, are known to be close friends to industry insiders. When Rain recently made a comeback to the local music scene, he reportedly said that he is happy to see "one familiar face" on televised music shows, referring to Lee, who also came out with a new album titled "H-Logic."

Lee Hyo Ri: ‘Hara is Information Source about Idol Groups’

On the episode of KBS 2TV's “Happy Together” that aired on May 13, Lee Hyo Ri, Rain, Goo Hara, and Lee Joon from MBLAQ appeared and had a pleasant time.

In the episode, Goo Hara said that she and Lee Hyo Ri go to the same hair salon, and once when she met Lee Hyo Ri at the salon, Lee Hyo Ri asked, “Among idol group members, who are the couples?” Hara disclosed the fact that Lee Hyo Ri is very much interested in the world of idol groups. After listening to her disclosure, Lee Hyo Ri said, “These days, when Rain or I go to broadcasting station, we usually do not come out from the waiting room, but idol group members exchange their thoughts through their eyes and they go in and out of the restroom. So, I was just curious.” And Yoo Jae Seok asked Goo Hara whether she gave the requested information to Lee Hyo Ri. Hara said, “I told about some members, but she said that she already knew the story, but actually I think that she did not know about them at all.” With her utterance, she drew a big laugh.

Yoo Jae Seok said, “Meanwhile, when Lee Hyo Ri told me about idol groups, she tended to be very knowledgeable about their lives, but actually it was not true that she knows everything.” Yoo Jae Seok made a disappointed face, causing Lee Hyo Ri to become embarrassed.

Meanwhile, Rain revealed his unique sense of economy and created an uproar in the set. Rain said, “These days, idol groups are usually made up of more than five members, so when they come to me to say hello, they give me only one CD, but I have to give more than five CDs to them. So, I asked them to choose a representative to come and say hello to me.” MC Shin Bong Sun asked, “When Girls Generation members come to you, you might be stumped because you have to give nine CDs.” But, Rain answered with smile, “When it comes to Girls Generation, I definitely have to give nine CDs to them.”

Just when you thought April was the month of hot comebacks in k-pop music (think Lee Hyori, Rain, 2PM, Gummy), May is cranking up the heat with a list of its own comeback artists. We already saw f(x) make their comeback with their new song "NU ABO" on May 3rd. This was followed by Davichi's mini-album ust on May 6th. We also have the Wondergirls slated to release their single ("2 Different Tears) on May 16th, although "Innocence" dropping on May 5th and Seo In-gook's "Just Beginning" coming out on May 6th. We have more to look forward to. The Wondergirls big date is May 16th when their single "2 Different Tears" will be unveiled for the world. And those are just the ladies. May will be full of boy idol groups galore! The popular group Super Junior is expected to come back with their fourth album "Bonamana" on May 13th. They'll be performing their "comeback stage" on Music Bank on May 14th. A music video teaser for "Miinah" came out on May 6th to hold fans over until then. Rain and Lee Hyori rock televised music shows

Winners of televised music programs Rain and Lee Hyori [J.Tune Entertainment, Mnet Entertainment]

Top Korean singers Rain and Lee Hyori took over the top spot on televised music programs over the weekend.

"Love Song" singer Rain claimed the top honor on KBS' Friday music program "Music Bank," taking his third consecutive win on the show, while queen of pop Lee Hyori's "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" scored the Mutizen Award on SBS' music program "Inkigayo" on Sunday.

"Music Bank" was broadcast for the first time in six weeks and "Inkigayo" for the first time in three weeks following the mysterious explosion of naval ship Cheonan in late March which had put the country into a state of grievance.

"Music Bank" had however revealed its weekly winner on its official website during the hiatus period.

Rain has been enjoying his comeback to the local music scene with his special album "BACK TO BASIC" featuring his tracks "Love Song" and "Hip Song" which have conquered several online and offline music charts since its release in early April.

Lee made her music return in mid-April with her fourth album "H.Logic" which too has been popular on various music charts.

Lee Hyori new album reigns Mnet charts

Korean queen of pop on Mnet's "Mnet Countdown' [Mnet]

Korean queen of pop Lee Hyori has gracefully bowed onto the top spot of cable music channel Mnet's singles chart with her single "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."

The songstress' title track from her fourth album "H. Logic" claimed the No. 1 position on the chart, pushing back last week's winner Rain to become the most-popular single during the week of April 12 to 18.

Lee had made a smashing return to the stage last Thursday with "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" on Mnet's televised music program "Mnet Countdown."

Her song "How Did We Get" featuring Daesung of idol group Big Bang successfully entered the chart in second place, while "Hip Song" by Rain followed sequentially, climbing a spot from the previous week to rank in third.

Meanwhile, Lee conquered the album chart as well, overtaking last week's winner Rain yet again by jumping five slots to claim the title of best-selling record.

Rounding out the top three albums were Rain's special album "BACK TO THE BASIC," which fell back one slot, and remaining in the same post as the week before was the original soundtrack to MBC TV series "Personal Taste" starring Lee Min-ho and Son Ye-jin.

Lee Hyo Ri: ‘Tide of Girl Groups is not Crisis, but Opportunity’

Interviewer: "Do you regard yourself as a star singer?”

Lee Hyo Ri: “Since I can see many vicious comments about me, I might rank among the top in terms of people’s interest.”

Interviewer: "There are opinions that you tried to emulate the style of pop singers such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce.”

Lee Hyo Ri: “I do not want to lag behind the international trend. More important point is that I have to make my own style while following the trend.”

There are no unnecessary words in the conversation with singer Lee Hyo Ri (31). She sometimes straightforwardly opens her heart and she is also very good at pushing and pulling during the talk. She can attract her fans both with her sensual eyes that are full of charisma onstage and her smiling eyes revealing her easygoing personality on reality shows.

I met Lee Hyo Ri, who recently released her fourth album entitled “H.LOGIC,” at her favorite café. She came out in comfortable clothes with a baseball cap on her head. She expressed her satisfaction by saying, “Releasing an album is like waiting for my homework to be checked. But, comparing to the past when I used to be very nervous, this time was different because I wanted to let people hear my songs as soon as possible.”

I expected that her feelings might have been hurt when her new songs were illegally distributed two days before the official release, but she said with an assertive attitude, “I was sorry because I knew that songwriters and my agency could be damaged. I was annoyed, but it was not something to cry about.”

◇”I want to be an ‘untouchable’ senior singer.”

Lee Hyo Ri had agonized, “What kind of attitude should a 'big brother' or 'big sister' have in a situation where many girl groups are coming out and gaining popularity in the music industry?” She thought that she needs to be differentiated from junior singers and, at the same time, needs to create new trends and be a model for other singers. In this way, she felt a kind of responsibility. That is why she entitled her album “H.LOGIC.” She focused her thoughts on many topics such as her music, fashion, and music videos.

She explained more, “I released my album with 14 songs in it because I wanted to make my album different from that of other girl groups which contains only one single or a few songs. I thought this might have a good effect on other junior singers. Also, I wanted to show that I can succeed even though I invested huge money on my music and music videos for good songs and good music videos like we--other senior singers--did before.”

Lee Hyo Ri has chosen Hip Hop to make changes to her music. She had received 1000 demo songs and picked about 100 songs from among them, and she finally chose ten songs. As she had suffered from a plagiarism sandal when she released her second album, she said, “To find out whether there are similar songs to my final choices, I checked thoroughly through an iPhone application (Sound Hound) that can search music.” She wanted to make new songs in terms of composition of musical instruments and sound, so she worked with unfamiliar American composers such as Bonnie Ryan and Bahnus Vacuum.

She said, "I liked hip hop since when I was young. I tried to expand the genre of music based on the hip hop sound into south hip hop and gangster hip hop, retro hip hop, and a ballad with hip hop rhythm. Many competent rappers and girl group rappers have participated in making my album and they were chosen based on their capability, not based on their popularity. I did rap this time and I am worried because I had shown funny rapping in a reality show.”

She used real musical instruments instead of electric sound on her titles songs such as “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “Bring It Back,” ”Swing,” and “Memory” because she wanted to show her intention that she does not want to join the recent flood of electric sound. She does not even use Auto Tune, which many singers use to correct vocal pitch.

Does her obsession about “being different from others,” and “creating and leading a trend” come from the competition with girl groups who are in their teens and 20s?

She said, "People say the popularity of girl groups is a crisis, but I think it is rather an opportunity. If there are many girl groups out there, a singer like me can be differentiated and viewers might be able to relieve their tedium caused by overly similar girl groups. I did not focus on cute and girlish style in fashion, hair and makeup like other girl groups; instead, I focused on charismatic and androgynous appeal and hip hop music."

She has become a standard that other female singers with a sexy concept, such as Sohn Dam Bi and Ivy, have to overcome for success. Some music management agencies even advertise this phenomenon as a “showdown with Lee Hyo Ri.”

She said, "I might feel sad if I found out that my name is not in any 'showdown' (laugh). One day, I was drinking beer and read a news article saying 'Sohn Dam Bi is addicted to exercise' and I was actually stimulated by seeing the article. After that, for two month before my scheduled album release, I have done pilates workouts. But, I want to be an 'untouchable' singer that no one can compare to. I have to be ‘untouchable.’”

She added a comment about her close senior singer Uhm Jung Hwa, “She is an ‘untouchable’ and wonderful singer. We have a kind of understanding for each other both as entertainers and as women.”

◇Lee Hyo Ri on TV: "It's not 100 percent me.”

People try to divide Lee Hyo Ri as a star singer and as a normal person. People ask her which one is the real “Lee Hyo Ri” -- the one who shows “bling-bling” fashion and the other one who can wear casual clothes naturally.

Also, many people think that the easygoing Lee Hyo Ri that was revealed on SBS TV's “Family Outing” might be he real Lee Hyo Ri.

She said, "'Family Outing’ is a reality show, so I showed a part of me to play a role on the program. But, it is not true that the character showed on the program is 100 percent Lee Hyo Ri. I do not bully guys and do not feel jealous about junior singers. If I had showed 100 percent Lee Hyo Ri on the program, that would bring out no division in myself on the stage. I think that other junior singers also should not show 100 percent of their real image because even actors have to play another role and different character in different works.”

She has shown an image as a strong woman on TV and it is actually apparently a misunderstanding. She said, “Whenever I enter my home with no lights, I feel afraid, and I also want to get married. I have lived alone for five years, but it was not my intention. I had to live alone.”

She used to say that she would not have any feelings left about being a star once she became married, but her thoughts have changed.

"I completely changed my mind. I think I have to pursue both love and work, so I would not marry a man who wants me to give up my work. With this reason, I like men who are working in the same industry as me such as a producer, director, or photographer. Uhm Jung Hwa once said that men might be afraid of her, but she is waiting for a man who can succeed.”

She calls herself a “domestic” singer and she frankly admits that she is not interested in advancing overseas because she is not an adventurous person and also wants to see someone regularly, have more time with family and does not want to have a hard time. Since she debuted as a member of “Fin.K.L.” 12 years ago, she is now financially stable.

She said, “I earned a lot of money, but I think I failed to invest money. I once invested in the stock market, but I completely lost my money. My parents bought real estate and a house in Chen An long time ago. Also, I did not start any other business to be more faithful to my own job as a singer. These days, I invest money in my clothes for better performances. People are more sensitive about their preferences, so if I don't prepare my clothes properly, they will notice it.”

I asked about her secret of remaining a star singer for such a long time, and she showed her confidence again. She said, "When a director Park Chan Wook makes a new movie, people watches the trailer regardless of their preferences. Like this, I think that I built up a kind of trust in people. People might be curious about my new album. Sometimes, I suffer from the pressure that I have to establish trust, but I also enjoy solving problems while I study.”

She continued, “Honestly, dancing in high heels is physically challenging, but whenever I see people’s interest shown in my new album, I become more positive even enough to think that a married woman can also be a dance singer. I also want to try acting and want to be successful as an MC, too.”

She finished the interview by saying that she would like to go somewhere and eat and drink a great deal when she finishes her activities for her new album, because she has "starved for a month" for the album.

Korean queen of pop Lee Hyori has ascended her way up to the top of Gaon's singles chart for the week of April 4 to 10 with her latest single "Swing."

The songstress scored her first win during the second week of April, scaling up 11 spots on the music chart to beat out last week's winner Rain.

The new song by Lee has been gaining popularity since its release earlier this month on online music sites. She will be making her stage comeback today on the televised music program "Mnet Countdown."

Rounding out the top three singles were Rain's new tune "Love Song" which stood in second followed by After School's "Bang."

Meanwhile, Rain's newly released special album "BACK TO THE BASIC" bowed into the top slot on Gaon's album charts.

The recent digital single "Blowin My Mind" by R&B trio Brown Eyed Soul positioned itself in second place and the special album "Festa on Ice 2010" featuring tracks from girl group Brown Eyed Girls entered the chart at No. 3.

The Gaon music chart, considered the Korean equivalent of the U.S. Billboard chart, was launched last month. Its data has been accumulated from online and offline sales statistics from the country's major web-based providers and record distribution companies.

Pop sensation Lee Hyori's fourth album "H.Logic" has skyrocketed to the top of online music charts in just a day of its release.

Title track "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" has taken over the No. 1 spot on all music charts, while other tracks on her record have entered the top 50 of several online music charts including Melon, Dosirak and social networking website Cyworld.

On the web-based charts of cable music channel Mnet and music provider Bugs, the entire record listing successfully broke into the top 30 slots.

The artist is currently preparing for her stage comeback on Thursday where she will perform on Mnet's televised music program "Mnet Countdown."

Lee, 30, made her debut in 1998 as the leader of the now-disbanded girl group Fin.K.L and soon after began her solo career in 2002. She has released three studio albums producing several hits including "10 Minutes," "Hey Girl," "Get Ya" and "U-Go-Girl."

Singer Lee Hyori [Mnet Media]

Singer Lee Hyori's album will be released today, a day earlier than announced last week, according to her agency Mnet Media on Monday.

Mnet decided to pull up the date from midnight on Tuesday to 11 a.m. today, after the title song to her new album "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" got leaked on video website YouTube over the weekend.

A 30-second teaser video to the song from the Korean pop phenom's fourth full-length album "H.LOGIC" had been released Friday, following the release of song "Swing" the previous week, also from her upcoming album.

Mnet added that the music video for "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" will also be unveiled today although the hard copy of Lee's albums will have to go on sale starting tomorrow due to issues over distribution.

Lee, 30, debuted in 1998 as a member of popular girl band Fin.K.L. and went solo after the group disbanded in 2002. She has released three studio albums as a solo artist, producing several hits including “10 Minutes”, “Hey Girl”, “Get Ya” and “U-Go-Girl”.

Korean pop singer Lee Hyori will be unveiling the teaser video to the title track of her upcoming album today, according to her agency Mnet Media on Friday.

Mnet explained that the teaser, a 30-second clip from the music video to "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," will be released on major portal sites and various online music providers at 5 p.m. today.

The singer started revealing songs from her fourth album "H-Logic" last week, starting with "Swing" which took to the top of Korea's music charts for several days.

The entire record was set to go on sale yesterday but has been delayed to April 13 following the cancellation or postponement of all televised music shows last week.

The country had been in a state of grievance after a mysterious explosion sank South Korea's naval ship Cheonan in late March.

She has also branched out to acting, hosting and appearing on variety shows, most notably on the first season of SBS’ “Family Outing”.

Korean pop phenom Lee Hyori has postponed the release date of her new album "H-Logic," according to her agency Mnet Entertainment on Wednesday.

A representative at Mnet stated the date has been delayed from tomorrow to April 13, also pushing back the unveiling of her music video and title track.

"It is still unclear whether music shows will air this week so we didn't want to release the album first and have her wait too long till giving her first performance," Mnet explained of the reason for their decision.

All three of Korea's major public networks cancelled or delayed the airing of most of their entertainment shows last week after a mysterious explosion sank South Korea's naval ship Cheonan in late March.

Accordingly, the singer will begin promoting her fourth album once the record goes on sale next week.

Meanwhile, her latest song "Swing" has been successfully climbing the charts of several online charts including Bugs, Dosirak, Soribada, Daum.

Lee made her debut in 1998 as the leader of the now-disbanded four-member girl group Fin.K.L. She began her solo career in 2002 releasing several albums which include her hit songs "10 minutes," "Hey Girl" and "Get Ya."

She has also made a name in the entertainment industry by starring and hosting several variety shows. Her most notable appearance is in the first season of the SBS' reality show "Family Outing."

After weeks of hype and speculation, M-net Media has finally unveiled a teaser video of K-pop sensation Lee Hyori’s comeback of her fourth album. Titled “H-Logic”, the video surfaced on Mnet.com and Naver Music at 11 AM on March 29, 2010.

Though the teaser is short, running for a mere 30 seconds, Lee Hyori shows off her typically dynamite style.

Teaser pictures of Lee Hyori had surfaced just a day before, showing off her new platinum blonde hair, a bright yellow and black patterned outfit, and smokey eye makeup. Lee who is known as a fashion and style icon in Korea, was also seen sporting a more casual attire of trendy athletic-wear.

What’s even more noteworthy was the tiger that popped up in the teaser video. According to a source from the music video production team, the tiger was an idea from the pop diva herself. Lee teamed up with music video director Cha Eun-taek for the video of her new title song off the “H-Logic” album. Cha was also the director behind some of Lee’s previous works such as “Animotion”, “You Go Girl”.

So far, the response from the public has been positive. Netizens have been posting up comments such as “What a hit concept!”, “Looks hot”, “That’s so Lee Hyori”.

Lee Hyori’s comeback has been a long time coming! It’s been 22 months since her last album “It’s Hyorish” in 2008. Her brand new album is expected to hit the market April 8th.
