Wonder Girls member Sun's father passes away

Korean singer Sun of pop group Wonder Girls is mourning over the death of her father, who passed away earlier this morning due to a chronic illness.

An official at agency JYP Entertainment (JYPE) explained that Sun had stayed by his side after flying into Korea on Tuesday upon hearing the news that her father was in a critical condition.

"Sun is in grief over losing her father and tears streamed down her face endlessly," the official was quoted as saying. "She is currently participating in his wake."

The death of Sun's father might affect the group's ongoing 27-stop U.S. tour as the girls were scheduled to kick off the second part of the tour in Honolulu on June 25.

JYPE remained cautious about making any comments related to the tour, only saying "that is something we should discuss after the funeral and after Sun recovers her peace of mind."

Wonder Girls -- originally composed of Sohee, Yubin, Sun, Yenny and Mimi -- debuted in Korea in 2007 and quickly became one of the most successful pop groups in the country with three consecutive No. 1 singles, "Tell Me", "So Hot", and "Nobody".

At the height of their popularity in Korea, producer Park Jin-young made headlines last summer when he took the quintet to the U.S. where they began working as a virtually unknown pop group from Asia.

Their hard work paid off when the girls scored an opening gig for popular boy band Jonas Brothers' U.S. summer tour, appeared on several TV shows and became the first Korean artists to make the Billboard chart with their debut single "Nobody" in October 2009.

The quintet, with new member Lim replacing Mimi after she left the group in February, recently made a splashing comeback to the K-pop music scene with "2 Different Tears," their first full-length album since "The Wonder Years" in 2007.

Last month, the girls returned to Korea to promote the title track "2DT," which topped various music charts upon its release. The single was recorded in Korean, Chinese and English.

The wake service for Sun's father is being held at Seoul Asan Hospital.
