TVXQ members file 3 bln lawsuit against SM

Three members of boy band TVXQ, namely Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, have filed a lawsuit worth three billion won, equivalent to nearly 2.5 million dollars, against major talenthouse SM Entertainment.

According to the Seoul Central District Court on Monday, the three singers brought suit against SM, demanding that they be confirmed their 13-year exclusive contract with the agency had been nullified, along with one billion won each, part of their share of profits they claim to have failed to receive.

The three had applied for provisional disposition of their contract with SM last July, saying it was too long and unfair, to which the court ruled in partial favor of, stating that SM cannot interfere with their individual activities.

This led to a halt of their activities as a five-man band in Korea and a few months later in Japan. The three then formed a separate group, signing with Japanese agency AVEX, through which they declared they would pursue their singing careers.

After giving a series of sold-out concerts in Japan just two weeks ago which they held to "express gratitude to fans," the new trio have been gearing up for their debut which is set to be produced by prominent U.S. musicians Kanye West and Timbaland.

Meanwhile, SM too had sued the three singers in mid-April in a suit worth 2.2 billion won for the damages the agency and the remaining two members, U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin, have suffered from the legal battle.

Since their 2004 debut, TVXQ, discovered and managed by SM, had arguably been one of the most successful K-pop acts in Asia with reportedly the largest fanbase in the world.

Enjoying great success in the Japanese music industry in particular, they became the first foreign artist to top the Oricon singles charts six times and placed their single and album simultaneously within the top three slots of Oricon's singles and albums chart, the first time for a foreign artist to do so in 15 years.

Korean pop idols Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, three members of boy band TVXQ who formed a new unit since getting involved in a legal battle with agency SM Entertainment, gave a sold-out concert in Japan over the weekend.

According to a report by Japanese newspaper Sankei Sports, the trio performed their last show of their two-city, four-gig concert tour in the country in front of some 54,000 fans who showed up Sunday at Tokyo Dome. The four shows reportedly attracted a total of 200,000 fans.

During the concert, whose setlist was comprised of a total of eighteen songs, the three singers broke into tears while performing their new track "W."

"I want to keep on singing with a pure heart. Thank you forever," Hero Jaejoong was quoted as saying at the show.

Bandmate Micky Yoochun thanked fans saying, "We were very worried if we could perform on stage again. We were able to get here because of you."

Last July, the three singers had asked a court to nullify their 13-year exclusive contract with SM, claiming that the contract period is too long.

The legal dispute led to the mega-successful boy band halting their activities as a five-member group, who officially quit working as a group in Korea last year and later in Japan as well.

Arguably the most phenomenal K-pop act created by talent agency SM Entertainment, the TVXQ had enjoyed great success throughout Asia and the Japanese music industry in particular.

Last year, they became the first foreign artist to top the Oricon singles charts six times and placed their single and album simultaneously within the top three slots of Oricon's singles and albums chart, the first time for a foreign artist to do so in 15 years.

Although the group's legal woes did little to wane their popularity among fans, the five members have been going their separated ways with Hero, Micky and Xiah forming a new group through which they will continue their music careers.

The trio are set to release a documentary DVD on July 28 and appear at music festival "a - nation'10" to be held in Osaka and Tokyo starting August 7.

Two other members, leader U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin, have ventured into acting with starring roles in upcoming musical production of "Goong" and television drama "Paradise Ranch," respectively.

Xiah Junsu to kick off solo career on May 22

Singer Xiah Junsu [SM Entertainment]

Korean pop idol Xiah Junsu will officially begin his solo activities in Japan on May 22, according to Japanese daily newspaper Sankei Sports on Monday.

Sankei reported that the 23-year-old singer is set to give a guest performance at the "Girls Awards 2010," a major music and fashion event to be held at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo.

At the 15,000-seat ceremony, Xiah will perform his solo debut single "Intoxication" which is set for release four days later.

"I am nervous and excited about the performance since it has been a while that I have sung on a big stage alone. Hopefully my fans will enjoy it," Xiah was quoted as saying in the paper.

Xiah's first single album titled "XIAH" will feature his title track "Intoxication" and "Beautiful Love - If You Are By My Side," the main theme song for the mobile Bee TV drama of the same name that stars fellow TVXQ member Micky Yoochun.

TVXQ members Hero Jaejoong, Micky and Xiah have been going their separate ways from their five-man band since July last year when they were granted partial victory by a court in a request to have their 13-year exclusive contract with major talenthouse SM Entertainment nullified.

They started by halting their activities in Korea immediately and later in Japan in early April, but Avex, who had been in charge of the boys' career in Japan, stated just a week later that the three have formed a separate group through which they will pursue their singing careers.

SM has filed a suit against the three, claiming compensation for the damages the agency and the remaining two members have suffered from the action.

TVXQ had been one of the most successful groups in Asia since their debut in 2004 with reportedly the largest fan base in the world.

Xiah Junsu Sings Theme Song for Micky Yoochun’s Drama

Xiah Junsu, who is a member of Dong Bang Shin Ki which recently suspended its activities as a group, sang the theme song for a drama that another member, Micky Yoochun, appears in as a main character.

The newspaper Sankei Sports delivered the news on April 28 that Micky Yoochun will debut as an actor in the mobile broadcasting company Bee TV’s new drama “Beautiful Love - if you are by my side” and that he will act speaking in Japanese. Also, it added that songs by Xiah Junsu, who debuted as a solo singer, were chosen as the theme song for the drama as well as background music.

The drama “Beautiful Love - if you are by my side” is scheduled to air from June 4, which is Michky Yoochun’s birthday, and it will tell the love story between an offspring of a Korean chaebol and a magazine copy writer who wants to be a novel writer. The female lead will be played by Japanese teenage star Omasa Aya (19).

The producer of Micky Yoochun’s debut drama, Azuma Yasuyuki, explained the casting and continued to praise Micky Yoochun, saying, “I could sense that Mick Yoochun would be a new star as an actor when I saw that he had concentrated on his acting. I fell in love with him as an actor and I personally wish that he will appear in Japanese dramas continuously.”

Micky Yoochun, who made his first attempt at acting, said, “It was very difficult, but, at the same time, it was a very pleasant experience. It is amazing that I can have a different life and experience another person’s life while I act. I was impressed.” Also, he revealed his strong ambition towards both acting and singing by saying, “I want to act again, but I also want to sing again as soon as possible.”

Xiah Junsu, who will release his single album entitled “XIAH” on May 26, sang the theme song “If you are by my side - Beautiful Love” and the background song “Intoxication,” which are included in the single album. Xiah Junsu delivered a cheerful message, saying, “Since Micky Yoochun is cast as the main actor and also because the storyline of the drama is very nice, I did my best to sing these songs to brighten up the mood of the drama.”

Singer Xiah Junsu [SM Entertainment]

K-pop idol Xiah Junsu will be launching a solo singing career in Japan next month, according to TVXQ's official Japanese webpage on Monday.

A notice posted on http://toho-jp.net/ explained that music channel MTV Japan will run a program in mid-May featuring the music video of the singer's solo debut single "Intoxication."

The four-part program, titled "MTV Making the Video," will show how the music video for his new song is created.

Xiah will officially unveil the single, written and composed by the singer himself, in Japan at the end of May.

Less than two weeks ago, Avex had announced that TVXQ members Hero Jaejoong, Micky Yoochun and Xiah Junsu, currently embroiled in a legal battle with major talenthouse SM Entertainment, have formed a separate group through which they will pursue their singing careers.

Hero, Micky and Xiah had asked a court in July of last year to nullify their 13-year exclusive contract with SM to which the court ruled that the agency will not interfere in their individual activities

This prompted them to stop working as a group in Korea ever since and in Japan starting this month.

SM has filed a suit against the three idols too, claiming 2.2 billion won worth of compensation for the damages the agency and the remaining two members have suffered from the action.

TVXQ was considered one of the most successful musical acts in Asia and Japan, becoming one of the first foreign artists to top the prestigious Oricon singles charts six times with their 27th single "Share the World/We are!"

They made music history in Japan again in April when their single and album simultaneously placed within the top three slots of Oricon's singles and albums chart.
