Flo Rida calls Seoul concert with G-Dragon "great show"

U.S. hip-hop artist Flo Rida (left) and Korean pop idol G-Dragon [Twitter]

U.S. hip-hop artist Flo Rida informed his fans via Twitter that he put on a "great show" in Korea with K-pop idol G-Dragon over the weekend.

Flo Rida posted several "tweets," or messages on popular social networking and micro-blogging service Twitter, during the time he was in Seoul for the concert, where he performed two shows on May 21 and 22.

G-Dragon, the leader of popular Korean boy band Big Bang, had appeared on the show as a guest performer on the latter night.

The American rapper appeared satisfied with the Seoul gig and spoke highly of G-Dragon. In a post dated May 23, he wrote that he performed a "great show with G-Dragon from Korea" and also sent out "Much love to my fans in Korea."

The joint performance by the two musicians put to bed all the negative criticism that had dogged G-Dragon last year, when he had been accused of plagiarizing Flo Rida's song "Right Round" in his hit single "Heartbreaker."

Fans are responding favorably to the Seoul concert as well -- one fan commented "You and GD killed the stage!!" while another wrote "GD is a beast," meaning they both gave fantastic performances.

Julia Beverly, editor of U.S. hip-hop magazine Ozone who accompanied the American singer to Korea, even posted a picture of Flo Rida and G-Dragon together prior to their performance, on her Twitter page.

Flo Rida, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, shot to international stardom with the success of his debut single "Low," which spent eleven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard singles chart.

His sophomore album "R.O.O.T.S." featured the single "Right Round," which became an instant hit and sold over 636,00 copies in one week.

American hip-hop artist Flo Rida [Official Flo Rida website]

Big Bang member G-Dragon will perform as a guest at American rapper Flo Rida's concert later this month, according to concert promoter Moonstone Korea on Monday.

G-Dragon, the leader of popular Korean idol group Big Bang, will take to the stage of Flo Rida's upcoming first concert in Korea to be held at Yonsei University's Main Auditorium on May 21 and 22.

Flo Rida, whose real name is Tramar Dillard, had done a featuring for a newly recorded version of G-Dragon's "Heartbreaker," a song which was originally accused of having plagiarized the U.S. rapper's hit single "Right Round."

G-Dragon will sing on the second day of Flo Rida's concert, while comedian Yoo Se-yoon, who recently caused a sensation with his music video "I'm Sorry I'm Not Cool," will grace the stage on the first day.

Flo Rida is one of the best known rappers in the world, whose first single "Low" held onto the No. 1 spot on the prestigious Billboard singles chart for 11 weeks.

His most recent second album "R.O.O.T.S." featuring "Right Round," stayed on Billboard's Hot 100 chart for six weeks.

Tickets for the concert will be available on online shopping website Interpark starting May 12 at 10 a.m.

One source multi use continues to remain a model which maximizes profits for creators. In the United States, Miley Cyrus' 3-D documentary film "Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour 2008" and the release of the Rolling Stones' live concert "Shine A Light" confirmed the possibility of using concerts for multi use. "Shine A Light," G-Dragon's first solo concert held last December, was digitally re-mastered and shown in 13 CGV theaters last Thursday. It is receiving attention as an attempt at providing various ways to consume an idol singer's show as a form of content.

Footage of G-Dragon's concert "Shine A Light"

"I am up and coming singer G-Dragon," the idol said as his opening remark for the premiere of his concert release on April 15 at the Yeongdeungpo CGV Starium, the exact same comment he made at his concert in December. He pointed out, "To put it simply, just watch it as if you were at a real concert" since the production includes the same composition and repertoire of the actual event. "Shine A Light" features the live concert of G-Dragon that was filmed by HD transmission cameras and other various video equipment from Japan prepared beforehand by YG Entertainment. The concert DVD will go on sale this Tuesday.

The movie version of "Shine A Light" shows off the concert know-how of YG Entertainment with its many years of concert experience. According to Jung Chi-young, YG Entertainment's concert planner, YG CEO Yang Hyun-suk came to the theater a day in advance to inspect the sound for the screening because he had showed great passion for the show. Yang explained that "Shine A Light" is a symbolic event because it is evidence of YG Entertainment's 10-year history. It is historical since it captures the start of G-Dragon's career -- he wanted to become a rapper since he was 13 years old -- and that small part makes up YG's history. That is why the concert, which begins with the question of "Who am I?," needs to feature the controversial bed performance and songs "She's Gone" and "Korean Dream." But one has to question how underage viewers were allowed to see the performance through the video despite ongoing investigation of hazardous media material and suggestive dance moves between G-Dragon and Korea's Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs. This could have been a chance for G-Dragon to prove that he is a musician with many talents and passion but one cannot feel concern over whether the controversy may be reignited again.

Rain and G-Dragon score winning debuts on Gaon charts

The cover of Rain's special album "BACK TO THE BASIC" [J.Tune Entertainment]

Asian pop sensation Rain has made a splashing comeback to the K-pop music scene with his new single "Love Song", debuting atop Gaon's singles chart last week.

For the week of March 28 to April 3, the singer took his first crown on the Korean music chart by defeating last week's winner Girls' Generation.

Rain's ballad track has been rapidly climbing several online charts since its release on March 30. All the tracks from his special album "BACK TO THE BASIC", which came out on April 7, have placed within the top ten on various real-time music charts on the day of its release.

Girl band After School came in second with "Bang!", climbing two spots from the previous week, and Brown Eyed Soul rounded out the top three with their hit tune "I’ll Move.”

Meanwhile, G-Dragon triumphed on the albums chart with his special concert album titled "Shine a Light", a live recording of his solo concert held last December in Seoul.

Boy band Beast followed behind at No. 2 with their record "Shock of the New Era" while Girls' Generation's "Run Devil Run" slid down to third place from the top spot.

The Gaon music chart, considered the Korean equivalent of the U.S. Billboard chart, was launched last month. Its data has been accumulated from online and offline sales statistics from the country's major web-based providers and record distribution companies.

G-Dragon's official cover of the live concert album "Shine a Light" [YG Entertainment]

Hip-hop artist G-Dragon has released his first live concert album "Shine a Light," according to his agency YG Entertainment on Tuesday.

The album is composed of G-Dragon's songs from his solo concert "Shine a Light," held last December with 24,000 fans in attendance.

The record also contains a bonus CD of G-Dragon's hit song "Heartbreaker" from last year, re-recorded with new rap and lyrics and a featuring by U.S. rapper Flo Rida.

The song had formerly been at the center of heated controversy when G-Dragon became accused of having plagiarized "Right Round" to create "Heartbreaker."

Newly arranged versions of G-Dragon's songs from his solo record and the compilation CD of "2001 Korea's Hip Hop Flex" featuring tracks "I Am 13," "G-Dragon," "Fine Gentlemen," "Storm" and a solo version of "Lies" are also included in the concert album.

G-Dragon, whose real name is Kwon Ji-young, is the leader of his five-member boy band Big Bang, who were discovered and trained by YG Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Big Bang is set to return to the Korean music scene as a group this summer after successfully wrapping up their activities in Japan.

G-Dragon cleared of all charges

G-Dragon from Big Bang [Newsen]

Big Bang’s leader G-Dragon has been cleared of all charges regarding child protection laws and performing banned songs at his concert.

On the 15th, it was judged that although the individual songs Korean Dream, She’s Gone were banned and the album Heartbreaker given a 19+ rating, this did not ban his concert itself so his performances didn’t break any laws.

The ‘bed performance’ which was brought up for ‘sexual publicity’ issues was also judged to be a part of the performance to express the song better on stage.

However, YG Entertainment was fined 3 million won ($2,700 USD) for the breach of concert laws. But because G-Dragon was considered to be only a participant of the event, he was exempt from any fines.

[KBS] G-Dragon Summoned for Lascivious Performance

▲ G-Dragon performs a passionate concert at the fencing arena of the Olympic Stadium in Seoul on September 27, 2009, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture & Tourism under the title of "Wonderful Korea Concert."

G-Dragon (real name Kwon Ji-yong) was summoned and examined for an alleged lascivious performance according to the statement of the Criminal Division I of the Eastern Seoul District Prosecutor´s Office (Chief, Jung Pil-Jae) on February 5.

G-Dragon appeared at the Prosecutor's Office as the accused on February 4, 8:45 P.M. and returned home around 10 P.M. after about one hour of investigation.

The prosecutor interrogated him as to whether he recognized that his performance brought up the image of sex and whether he performed the lascivious performance entirely according to the producer's directions.

The ministry of Health & Welfare requested that the prosecutor investigate whether his controversial performance violated the law, which prohibits R (Restriction of 19+) rated songs from being aired on TV and sold to minors. G-Dragon performed his R rated songs with allegedly obscene choreography during his concert at the Olympic Stadium early last December, which minors attended.

The prosecutor plans to decide whether they will charge him for the performance after a review of legal principles within the following week.
